Malkara, Tekirdağ's largest district by area, lies on plateau-like land near the Tekir Mountains and Mount Ganos. A centre for Ottoman raider cavalry units, it was occupied by Bulgarian forces on 9 November 1912 during the Balkan War; today the district produces some 150,000 tonnes of wheat and 60,000 tonnes of sunflower seed a year.
