Founded on either side of a deep, narrow valley in Konya's Selçuklu district, Sille has been settled since Phrygian times and was an important centre of early Christianity. Alongside churches, monasteries and rock-cut caves, chief among them the Church of Hagia Helena, it holds mosques, baths and fountains from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. With its traditional houses, it was declared an urban conservation site in 2001.
