Gebze

Gebze, in the northwest of the Gulf of İzmit in Kocaeli province, was founded in the 4th century BCE under the names Dakibyza and Libyssa and is now a major industrial and trade district, bordered by Dilovası to the east and Darıca and Çayırova to the west. The tomb of the Carthaginian general Hannibal, the Çoban Mustafa Paşa complex and the Osman Hamdi Bey Museum are among its historic sites; the district generates a significant share of Kocaeli's GDP.
