Karakoyunlu

Karakoyunlu is Iğdır's least populous district; Aralık lies to its east, Iğdır's centre to its west, the Armenian border to its north and the slopes of Mount Ağrı to its south. The area has been settled since the Urartian period (900-600 BC) and was under the rule of the Karakoyunlu (Black Sheep) state, from which it takes its name, between 1380 and 1467. Ram- and sheep-headed gravestones from the Karakoyunlu period are displayed in an open-air museum in the district.
