Balya, in the northwest of Balıkesir province on the Balıkesir-Çanakkale road, has been known for lead mining since antiquity. A French-built plant in 1901 was one of Türkiye's first thermal power stations, and the district was nicknamed 'Little İstanbul' in that period.
