Samsat, on the shore of the Atatürk Dam reservoir, is a district whose ancient name was Samosata. It was once the capital of the Kingdom of Commagene and later a Roman province; the waters of the reservoir now cover most of the old settlement, and the district is Adıyaman's smallest and least populated.
