Çaldıran, in northern Van at an elevation of 2,050 metres, holds the record for the lowest temperature ever measured in Turkey: -46.4°C on 9 January 1990. Its name is said to come from 'çil derân', meaning 'forty churches'. The district has geothermal springs reaching 83°C, which heat greenhouses used for tomato growing.
