Çemişgezek

Çemişgezek, in south-western Tunceli near the Euphrates valley, takes its name from the Armenian-origin Byzantine commander John I Tzimiskes. Passing through Hittite, Urartian, Roman and Byzantine rule, then the Seljuk and Artuklu periods, the area came under Ottoman administration before joining Tunceli Province in 1935. Mulberry growing and mulberry molasses production have long been important in the district.
