The building is a mansion built for the banker Kostaki Teofilaktos between 1898 and 1913 by Italian architects. Atatürk and his wife Latife Hanım stayed in the mansion on 15-17 September 1924. Transferred to the Ministry of National Education in 1937 and to the Ministry of Culture in 1987, the mansion opened as the Trabzon Museum in 2001 after restoration; its basement displays artefacts from the Early Bronze Age to the Ottoman period.
