It is not known exactly who built Tokat Castle or when, but its earliest traces date to the 5th-6th century and most likely belong to the Roman period. The castle remained under Byzantine rule for about 500 years before being taken by Danişmend Gazi in 1074. It was later repaired and used for defence during both the Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
