In 1553 Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha, son-in-law of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, had Mimar Sinan build a complex on a hill overlooking the sea. Of its mosque, madrasa, library, bathhouse, covered market, caravanserai and soup kitchen, the best preserved today are the mosque and the six-domed bedesten.
