Ulaş lies 35 km south of Sivas, on wide, flat terrain. The salt lake in the town centre, whose appearance changes with the seasons, is a notable feature and has been developed as a recreational area; cattle raising and its livestock market are important to the district's economy. Ulaş became a district in 1991.
