Gölova is Sivas's second-smallest district, in the upper Kelkit Valley, bordered by Akıncılar to the west and by Erzincan's Refahiye district to the east and south. The settlement, formerly called Ağvanis, became a district in 1990; Karnus yayla is its main highland pasture, used for grazing.
