Akçakale is a district of Şanlıurfa on the border with Syria; before the border was drawn, it was known as Tel Abyad (White Hill). Its economy rests on farming, chiefly cotton, wheat and corn, and the Akçakale border crossing, closed for years, reopened in January 2020.
