Rising in the centre of Ortahisar town, one kilometre off the Ürgüp-Nevşehir road, the rock castle is an ancient settlement thought to have been carved into the rock in the Hittite period; it stands over 50 metres high and can be seen from the main road. Around the town are traces of a rich monastic life, including the Harim, Sarıca and Cambazlı churches.
