Three kilometres from Gülşehir, whose ancient name was Zoropassos, on the Nevşehir-Gülşehir road, Açıksaray was an important episcopal centre with its countless spaces carved into tuff rock, Roman rock tombs and rock churches dated to the 9th-10th centuries. Research identifies the site as a monastic settlement, notable for its decoration, facades, large halls and stables. A mushroom-shaped fairy chimney found here is unique to this site in Cappadocia.
