Mardin's Grand Mosque is one of the important examples of 12th-century Artuqid architecture. The inscription on its square-based minaret gives a construction date of 1176, though the present minaret was rebuilt in 1888-89. The mosque's externally ribbed dome became a model for later buildings in Mardin. Still open for worship, it also houses a relic believed to be a hair from the beard of the Prophet Muhammad.
