The volcanic landscape in Kula district was declared the Kula-Salihli Volcanic Geopark in 2013, the first geopark in Turkey and Europe. The area has around 100 volcanic cones; the earliest eruptions occurred about 2 million years ago and the most recent about 10,000 years ago. Erosion has carved sharp, tower-like fairy chimneys, giving the area its nickname 'Kuladokya'.
