Arguvan is a district 71 km from Malatya's provincial centre; Elazığ's Baskil and Malatya's Arapgir lie to its east, Arapgir and Sivas's Divriği to its north, Hekimhan to its west and Yazıhan to its south. Known in Byzantine sources as Argaous since the 4th century, it was a sub-district of Arapgir under the Ottomans before becoming a district of Malatya in 1954. A Türkü (folk song) Festival has been held since 2003, and the Sacred Fish Park in the village of Kızık is a well-known local attraction.
