Başiskele is a district of Kocaeli near the Gulf of İzmit, bordered by Gölcük to the west and Kartepe to the east. Founded in antiquity by Megarian colonists under the name Astakos, the port town was an important centre of the Kingdom of Bithynia before being conquered in 1337 by Akçakoca Bey and Süleyman Paşa; the Yuvacık Dam, supplying drinking water to the district, has operated since 1999.
