Pompeiopolis was founded in 65 BCE by the Roman general Pompey after his conquest of the Kingdom of Pontus, on the Zımbıllı Tepe mound in the Gökırmak valley. It flourished as the metropolis of Paphlagonia in the 2nd century CE; excavations have uncovered a marble-seated theatre, an octagonal market building and a mosaic-floored Roman villa. Finds are displayed at the Kastamonu Archaeology Museum, with local finds also shown in a small museum in Taşköprü.
