In the Roman period Maraş was renamed Germanicia in honour of the emperor Caligula. Excavations in Bağlarbaşı and nearby neighbourhoods of today's city have uncovered floor mosaics with plant and geometric patterns as well as scenes of daily life and depictions of buildings. Some of the mosaics can be seen in place at the site, laid out as an open-air museum. Visiting conditions may have changed since the 2023 earthquakes; check before you go.
