Clazomenae, at Limantepe on the north coast of the Urla-Çeşme peninsula in the middle of the Gulf of İzmir, has been settled since around 4000 BC. The city was enclosed by a wall in the 7th century BC and grew prosperous from olive-oil production workshops by the late 6th century BC. Scientific excavations began in 1921 and have continued under Prof. Yaşar Ersoy since 2007.
