Torbalı lies south-east of İzmir on the fertile Küçük Menderes plain. The ruins of ancient Metropolis are here; its settlement history goes back to around 3000 BCE, with traces of Lydian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods. Since 1989 it has grown into one of İzmir's largest industrial and greenhouse-farming centres.
