The complex was designed in 1574 by the architect Sinan at the request of Grand Vizier Sokullu Mehmet Paşa, on the road linking Istanbul to Aleppo, Damascus and the Hejaz. A caravanserai, women's and men's baths, a madrasa, a mosque and a covered market with 45 shops complete the complex, whose courtyard is one of Türkiye's largest caravanserai courtyards. It was restored by Payas Municipality between 2011 and 2013. Visiting conditions may have changed since the 2023 earthquakes; check before you go.
