The Zap is Hakkari's largest river, flowing past the city centre about 7 kilometres to the east on its way south to join the Tigris. Fed by rain, snow and glacial melt, it swells in spring and early summer, and with an average flow of 86.5 cubic metres per second it is one of Türkiye's fastest-flowing rivers. Rafting, kayaking and river surfing are practised along the valley, which also has natural rock bridges formed by boulders that have tumbled from the slopes.
