Maden, in southern Elazığ, is a valley district on the Maden Stream at the foot of Mihrap Mountain. Its history goes back to around 2000 BC; copper deposits found here by the Assyrians were worked for millennia, and it came under Ottoman rule in 1515. The Ergani Copper Works, transferred to Etibank in 1936, made the district an important industrial centre for a time.
