İpsala lies in the southwest of Edirne province, on the border with Greece; the E-25 highway passes just south of the town centre to reach the İpsala border crossing. Known in antiquity as Kypsela, the capital of the Odrysian kingdom, the area was brought under Ottoman rule in 1356 by Gazi Evrenos Bey; around 35 percent of Turkey's rice is grown on the İpsala plain, and the district is known for its baldo rice.
