Known in antiquity as Ainos, Enez stands on a limestone peninsula with an inner and outer castle wall carrying traces of the Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman periods. Ancient stone blocks and inscribed marble fragments were reused in the walls. Around the castle stands Enez's former church, the Ayasofya (Fatih Mosque).
