Built on a high cliff overlooking the sea 3 km west of the town centre, the castle is known as the Genoese Castle because it was used by Genoese traders who settled here in the 13th century; it stands on the site of the ancient city of Diospolis. Parts of its tall tower and water cistern survive. The castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2013.
