According to its inscriptions, the Surp Giragos Armenian Church was built between 1515 and 1518 and, after burning down completely in 1880, was rebuilt on the same site in 1883. With its wide five-aisled, five-apsed plan, it is counted among the largest Armenian churches in the Middle East; its five-storey Gothic-style bell tower was demolished in 1916.
