Yenişehir is an old settlement that took the name "Yenişehir" (New City) when Osman Bey settled frontier troops there in the early 14th century. Today it is known for growing tomatoes and peppers and holds an annual Golden Pepper Festival; Ottoman-era mosques, bathhouses and the restored Şemaki House Museum are the district's historic buildings.
