Aydıntepe is the least populous district of Bayburt, bordered by central Bayburt and Trabzon's Çaykara district. Beneath the district centre lies the Aydıntepe Underground City, carved from tuff bedrock and dating to the Middle Ages; it was formerly called Hart.
