Kozluk Castle (Hezo Castle), in the Kale neighbourhood, was built on a rocky hill and is held to have been founded as a religious centre in 416 CE. It gained a strategic position on the Silk Road, served as the seat of a Nestorian bishopric in the 5th century, and was taken by Muslim armies in 639 CE. Today the castle survives in a largely ruined state.
