The Mor Kiryakus Monastery, in Ayrancı village in Beşiri district, stands on the slope of Mount Kıra overlooking the Mesopotamian plain and is thought to have been founded in the 5th century CE. The three-storey building has an underground level and vaulted rooms around an inner courtyard; a room with an octagonal ribbed stone dome is notable for the star-and-cross motifs on its ceiling. Repaired in the Ottoman period and later abandoned, the monastery has been renewed through restoration carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
